SIM-only deals: what to check before switching

A SIM-only deal covers mobile service rather than a new handset. It can be worth considering if you already have a suitable phone, but the price is only part of the decision.

General information for UK households, not personalised financial or debt advice. Confirm current terms and eligibility with the relevant provider.

1. Check the phone and existing contract

Confirm that your handset supports the new network and SIM or eSIM. Check the current minimum term, early termination charges and any outstanding device finance. Switching the airtime service does not necessarily end separate handset repayments.

2. Choose allowances from actual use

Review recent data usage, including busy months. A person who mostly uses home Wi-Fi may need different allowances from someone regularly tethering a laptop. Check calls, texts and charges outside the allowance too.

3. Check coverage, roaming and the term

Use coverage information for the places you rely on your phone, recognising that indoor reception can vary. Read roaming limits and destinations, scheduled price changes, minimum term and cancellation terms before choosing.

4. Keep your number deliberately

If keeping your number, request a PAC from your current provider and give it to the new provider following its instructions. Ofcom explains the text-to-switch process; a PAC is normally valid for 30 days. Check any termination or finance obligations before proceeding.
